US Must Restrain Israel’s Actions for Ceasefire to Hold: CM Omar Abdullah

Chief Minister flags concerns over Middle East tensions, questions US stance and India’s limited mediation role*

Srinagar, April 9: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said that the United States needs to restrain Israel’s actions to ensure the success of ongoing ceasefire efforts in the Middle East, asserting that the conflict was not initiated by Iran but imposed on it.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event at SKICC Srinagar, as per news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, Chief Minister Omar, expressed concern over escalating tensions, particularly Israel’s actions in Lebanon.

He said if the ceasefire fails, the responsibility would lie with Israel, adding that the US must act to rein in its actions.

Referring to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, Omar Abdullah said the statements coming from Washington lack consistency. He remarked that the changing tone and language are not befitting of a President and would not be acceptable even for ordinary users on social media platforms.

He further observed that people appear hesitant to act despite repeated threats, suggesting that fear of the US President may be a factor.

On India’s diplomatic positioning, the Chief Minister noted that New Delhi’s close ties with Israel may have limited its ability to play a mediatory role.

He added that the purpose of the conflict should have been clearly defined from the outset. (KNC)
