Ganderbal, June 3: Residents of New Colony Gangerhama in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district have urged the concerned authorities to undertake immediate repairs of the canal passing through the area and construct protective boundary walls along both sides to ensure public safety.
Locals said that several portions of the canal have developed leakages and suffered damage, resulting in water wastage and posing risks to residents, particularly children and elderly people living nearby. They expressed concern over the deteriorating condition of the canal and called for prompt intervention by the authorities.
The residents appealed to the Irrigation Department to address the issue on a priority basis and ensure proper maintenance of the canal infrastructure to prevent further damage and inconvenience.
Speaking to KNC, Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Irrigation, Syed Asif, said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Maryab Canal and Sherpathri Canal has already been submitted under the NABARD scheme.
“The DPR has been submitted, and once approval is received, the proposed works, including repairs, strengthening of canal infrastructure, and other necessary improvements, will be taken up,” he said.
Residents expressed hope that the project would receive approval at the earliest, paving the way for the resolution of long-pending canal-related issues and the implementation of adequate safety measures in the area.(KNC)
