Srinagar: Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti has found herself at the center of a fresh political storm after visual footage from a recent anti-Article 370 abrogation candlelight protest showed the Indian National Flag being displayed upside down.
During the demonstration organized to protest against the revocation of Jammu & Kashmir’s special status, images and video clips surfaced on social media showing Mufti holding the Tricolour inverted with the green strip on top instead of the saffron.
The oversight immediately triggered sharp criticism from political opponents and legal observers, who pointed out that displaying the National Flag inverted violates the Flag Code of India, 2002 and the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act, 1971. Under Indian law, disrespecting or displaying the Tricolour in an improper orientation intentional or otherwise is a punishable offense.
Critics slammed the PDP leadership for rushing into photo opportunities without verifying protocol, calling it a lapse of basic national etiquette.
While PDP representatives have not officially issued a public clarification regarding the incident.
