Srinagar, Aug 6: Srinagar Police has initiated legal proceedings against People’s Democratic Party (PDP) leader Iltija Mufti after registering an FIR over her alleged involvement in the assault of a police officer during a protest in Srinagar. Police have summoned her to appear before Police Station Kothibagh on August 7 as part of the ongoing investigation.

According to sources, the protest was led by PDP President Mehbooba Mufti and Iltija Mufti at S.K. Park on the evening of August 4. During the demonstration, a section of protesters allegedly attempted to violate restrictions by blocking Residency Road and marching towards Lal Chowk, prompting police intervention to maintain law and order.

Sources said police personnel, including adequate male and female contingents, were deployed at the venue and repeatedly appealed to the demonstrators to remain peaceful and comply with lawful directions. However, despite repeated warnings, some protesters allegedly attempted to breach police barricades and obstruct security personnel from performing their official duties.

During the ensuing scuffle, police have alleged that Iltija Mufti physically assaulted a police officer while he was discharging his official duties. She is also accused of grabbing the officer and biting his forearm, resulting in a bleeding injury.

As part of the investigation, police have issued a notice summoning Iltija Mufti to appear before the Investigating Officer at Police Station Kothibagh on August 7 to join the investigation in accordance with law.
