Anantnag Police Intensifies Anti-Drug Drive; 153 NDPS Cases Registered, 147 Arrested, Contraband Worth Over ₹48 Lakh Seized

Anantnag, May 1: In a major crackdown on drug trafficking and substance abuse, Anantnag Police has reported significant achievements during the first four months of 2026, registering 153 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and arresting 147 accused persons across the district.

According to official figures, police conducted multiple operations leading to the recovery of large quantities of contraband substances. The seizures include 170.995 kilograms of cannabis powder, 185.001 kilograms of ganja, 1.515 kilograms of charas, 14.574 kilograms of poppy straw, 160 grams of brown sugar, 38 grams of heroin, and 750 intoxicant tablets. The total estimated market value of the recovered contraband stands at approximately ₹48.20 lakh.

As part of its sustained campaign, the police also destroyed illegal narcotic cultivation spread over nearly 190 marlas of land, targeting the supply chain at its roots.

In addition, 21 vehicles involved in drug trafficking were seized. Legal action was also taken against offenders, resulting in the cancellation of 10 vehicle Registration Certificates (RCs) and 9 driving licences.

Taking stringent action against the financial assets of drug peddlers, Anantnag Police attached properties worth around ₹3.70 crore. These include five residential houses and three vehicles linked to those involved in narcotics trade.

In a further decisive move, three illegally constructed restaurants owned by drug peddlers were demolished along the NHW-44.

Reaffirming its commitment to eradicating the drug menace, Anantnag Police has urged the public to cooperate and share information related to drug trafficking to help build a drug-free society.(KNC)
