New Delhi/Varanasi, July 24: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a Senior Divisional Materials Manager (Sr. DMM) of the North Eastern Railway (NER), Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹1.70 lakh from a private contractor.

According to an official CBI press release, the agency registered the case on July 23, 2026, following a complaint filed by the proprietor of a GeM-registered private firm that had supplied furniture worth ₹9,47,510 to the office of the Sr. DMM, NER, Varanasi, between February and June 2026.

The complainant alleged that although only part payment had been released, the accused officer demanded an illegal gratification of ₹1.70 lakh on July 15, 2026, for clearing the pending payments and processing future bills. It was further alleged that the officer threatened the contractor with denial of future railway contracts if the bribe was not paid.

Acting swiftly on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on July 23, 2026, and allegedly caught the accused officer red-handed while accepting the bribe amount of ₹1.70 lakh.
