Srinagar, July 10: As the ongoing heatwave continues to grip Kashmir, students studying in colleges across the Valley have appealed to the Higher Education Department to announce summer vacations, saying the prevailing weather conditions are taking a toll on their health and studies.
Students from various government degree colleges told news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC that the soaring temperatures and lack of adequate cooling facilities inside classrooms have made it difficult to attend lectures.
“We have to sit in classrooms for hours despite the intense heat. Most classrooms lack proper ventilation and fans, making it uncomfortable to concentrate on studies,” a student wishing anonymity said.
Many students said long daily commutes have added to their difficulties, with the hot and humid weather leaving them exhausted even before classes begin.
“The extreme weather is affecting our attendance, concentration and overall academic performance. The authorities should take the situation into consideration and announce summer vacations,” another student said.
Students also questioned why schools were granted summer vacations while colleges continue to function under similar weather conditions. They said the existing vacation schedule for colleges does not reflect the prevailing climatic conditions and needs to be reviewed.
Appealing to the administration for immediate intervention, the students urged the government to prioritise their well-being and announce summer vacations without further delay.
When contacted, Director Colleges J&K, Sheikh Aijaz Bashir, as per KNC said that a proposal regarding summer vacations has already been submitted to the government and approval is awaited.
Kashmir has been witnessing an intense heatwave over the past several days, with temperatures remaining well above normal and affecting day-to-day life across the Valley. (KNC)
