New Delhi, July 9: In a significant order aimed at protecting the rights of individuals from erroneous criminal records, a Delhi court has directed the police to rectify official records after finding that a man had been incorrectly shown as being involved in 17 separate electronic FIRs despite never being arrested or charge-sheeted in those cases.

While hearing a bail application, the court observed that the accused had been falsely reflected in police records as being connected with multiple criminal cases. However, the court noted that he had neither been taken into custody nor named in any charge sheet in those FIRs, making the entries factually incorrect.

Expressing concern over the inaccuracies, the court remarked that such errors in police databases could have serious consequences for an individual’s liberty, reputation and future prospects. It directed the Delhi Police to immediately correct the erroneous entries and ensure that official records accurately reflect the factual position.

The court further stressed that maintaining accurate criminal records is a fundamental responsibility of law enforcement agencies, as incorrect data can adversely affect judicial proceedings and the rights of citizens.
