JAMMU, Apr 17: In an effort to safeguard communal harmony and public order, the District Magistrate of Jammu, Dr Rakesh Minhas, has issued a formal order under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) prohibiting the dissemination of inflammatory or false content on social media.
Effective immediately for a period of 60 days, the order bans residents from posting, sharing, or forwarding any material—including texts, videos, and memes—that promotes hatred between communities or spreads unverified rumors.
The directive places joint responsibility on WhatsApp group administrators and social media moderators to prevent the circulation of prohibited content, warning that violators could face severe legal consequences, including imprisonment under the BNS 2023 and the IT Act.
Meanwhile, the the Cyber Crime Unit has also been instructed to conduct 24×7 surveillance and citizens have been urged to verify information through official Government handles before sharing.
