Udhampur, July 27: The Additional Deputy Commissioner, Udhampur, has issued a weather advisory urging residents to remain alert from July 28 to July 31, 2026, following a forecast by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Srinagar, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall on July 30 across the district.
According to the advisory issued by the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the expected rainfall may be accompanied by brief spells of intense rain and thunderstorms, increasing the likelihood of flash floods, landslides, mudslides, shooting stones, waterlogging, and a sharp rise in water levels of rivers, streams and nallahs, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
The advisory warns that transport services may be disrupted, especially along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), the Ramnagar–Basantgarh–Latti road, and other interior routes due to landslides, slippery conditions and shooting stones.
Authorities have also cautioned about the possibility of moderate to severe thunderstorms and lightning in several parts of the district. Hilly areas including Ramnagar, Chenani, Latti-Dudu, Panchari, Moungri and Basantgarh, besides parts of Tehsil Majalta and Udhampur, have been identified as vulnerable to landslides and mudslides.
The administration has advised farmers to suspend harvesting, spraying and irrigation activities from July 28 to July 31 to minimise losses to crops and orchards. Waterlogging in low-lying areas and a rise in water levels of local nallahs, streams and the Tawi River catchment are also expected.
The general public has been urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the advisory period, particularly in hilly areas, verify road conditions before undertaking journeys on NH-44 and other district roads, and stay away from riverbanks, nallahs and landslide-prone locations. Farmers and orchardists have been asked to take precautionary measures to safeguard crops, orchards and livestock.
Meanwhile, the district administration has activated emergency preparedness measures and directed all concerned departments, including police, health, PHE, PWD, PDD, PMGSY, Irrigation and Flood Control, revenue officials and disaster response agencies, to remain on high alert and ensure prompt response to any eventuality.
In case of any emergency, the public has been asked to contact the District Emergency Operation Centre (DEOC) at 01992-272727 / 01992-272728 or dial the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) at 112.(KNC)
