Kulgam, Jan 19: The Traffic Police Sector Kulgam-Qazigund recorded significant achievements in traffic enforcement, regulation and road safety during 2025 under the leadership of DySP Traffic Mohammad Aslam and the direct supervision of SSP Traffic Rural Kashmir, S. Ravinder Pal Singh.

According to an official statement issued here to news agency Kashmir News Corner — KNC, the Traffic Police issued a total of 36,492 challans during the year, realising a fine amount of ₹1,59,07,900, while 186 vehicles were seized for various traffic violations. Notably, the sector witnessed a 20 per cent reduction in road accidents compared to the previous year, reflecting the impact of sustained enforcement and preventive measures.

In addition to enforcement, the Traffic Police conducted 269 traffic awareness programmes and launched 1,197 special drives aimed at curbing violations and promoting road safety among the general public.

Traffic management remained a top priority during high-pressure periods such as the Shri Amarnath Ji Yatra and the peak fruit season, when smooth movement of pilgrims and fruit-laden vehicles was critical. To ensure safe and regulated traffic flow, barricades were installed along NH-44 from Nowyug Tunnel to Alstop Crossing, and at key locations in Khudawani Town and Kulgam Town, including Gantagar to Sangus Crossing and Hospital Road. Night traffic regulation was further strengthened through the use of reflective jackets and handheld signalling equipment.

Special enforcement drives were carried out against rash driving and stunt riding, while crash barriers were erected at vulnerable and accident-prone locations to prevent mishaps and ensure hassle-free traffic movement. Increased enforcement was also deployed at identified black spots, with continuous monitoring improving compliance on major routes.

Awareness initiatives remained a cornerstone of traffic management, with programmes organised in schools, colleges and transport stands, particularly targeting students and drivers to sensitise them about traffic rules and safe driving practices. With the support of the Municipal Committee Kulgam and other allied departments, new parking facilities were created in Kulgam Town to ease congestion.

The removal of vendors and encroachments from roads and footpaths across Kulgam Town emerged as another major achievement, significantly improving traffic flow. The Traffic Wing followed a zero-tolerance policy against visible offences, including non-wearing of helmets, triple riding, dangerous driving, juvenile driving, overloading of public service vehicles and operation of vehicles without valid fitness certificates.

The Traffic Police received an encouraging and positive response from the general public, transporters, drivers and civil society, which played a crucial role in achieving the desired results. A key factor behind the success in 2025 was the strong cooperation from print, electronic and social media, which consistently helped disseminate traffic awareness messages.

The Traffic Wing also acknowledged the support of the District Police, District Administration and transport-related departments, which ensured the smooth implementation of enforcement and management measures at all levels.

Looking ahead to 2026, the Traffic Police Sector Kulgam–Qazigund reaffirmed its commitment to further improving hassle-free traffic movement and working towards a traffic-violation-free society, with enhanced traffic management in Kulgam Town, Qazigund Town, other urban centres and rural areas of District Kulgam.
