Srinagar, May 3: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday launched a major campaign against drug abuse and narco-terrorism in Srinagar, urging collective public action to eliminate the menace and safeguard the future of Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing a large gathering at TRC Football Ground, the Lieutenant Governor led a two-kilometre padyatra, joined by thousands of participants from different walks of life. The march symbolised a united stand against substance abuse and sent a strong message of resistance to narco-terror networks.
Sinha said the fight against drugs is not merely an administrative initiative but a people’s movement rooted in shared pain and determination. “It is the cry of every mother who has seen her child consumed by addiction and the commitment of every father who has witnessed dreams collapse. The resolve to uproot drugs reflects the collective will of society that has endured decades of suffering and now stands firm to say enough is enough,” he said.
Highlighting the crucial role of society, the Lieutenant Governor emphasized that elders, teachers, and spiritual leaders must actively guide the youth. He urged young people to stay away from drugs, stating that addiction robs them of freedom and potential, and encouraged them to channel their energy into sports, skills, and nation-building.
Terming narco-terrorism a grave threat to internal security, Sinha said drug trafficking is being used to fund terrorism and destabilise the region. He added that the administration has adopted a comprehensive strategy focusing on dismantling supply chains, spreading awareness, and ensuring rehabilitation of victims with dignity.
Under a stringent Standard Operating Procedure (SoP), authorities have intensified action against drug networks. Between April 11 and May 2, a total of 481 FIRs were registered across Jammu and Kashmir, leading to the arrest of 518 drug smugglers and peddlers. During the same period, 24 properties linked to drug proceeds were demolished, while assets worth crores were seized.
In addition, over 300 driving licences and 325 vehicle registrations have been recommended for cancellation. Nearly 3,000 drug stores were inspected, resulting in 107 licence suspensions and registration of one FIR. Officials said Kashmir accounted for a significant number of property attachments during this crackdown.
Reiterating the government’s “Zero Tolerance to Drugs” policy, the Lieutenant Governor warned that all drug syndicates and their support networks would be dismantled. “Every trafficker will be exposed, every criminal will face justice, and anyone aiding these networks, within or outside Jammu and Kashmir, will be held accountable under the law,” he asserted.
Calling for sustained public participation, Sinha urged citizens to pledge their commitment to building a drug-free Jammu and Kashmir. “Together, we must ensure that no child is lost to addiction, no family is broken, and every citizen thrives in health and strength. This is the vision and legacy we owe to future generations,” he said.(KNC)
